Wikipedia:Categories for discussion/Log/Today

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

See Wikipedia:Categories for deletion policies for the official rules of this page, and how to do cleanup.

Deletion of a category may mean that the articles and images in it are directly put in its parent category, or that another subdivision of the parent category is made. If they are already members of more suitable categories, it may also mean that they become a member of one category less.

How to use this page

[edit]
  1. Know if the category you are looking at needs deleting (or to be created). If it is a "red link" and has no articles or subcategories, then it is already deleted (more likely, it was never really created in the first place), and does not need to be listed here.
  2. Read and understand Wikipedia:Categorization before using this page. Nominate categories that violate policies here, or are misspelled, mis-capitalized, redundant/need to be merged, not NPOV, small without potential for growth, or are generally bad ideas. (See also Wikipedia:Naming conventions and Wikipedia:Manual of Style.)
  3. Please read the Wikipedia:Categorization of people policy if nominating or voting on a people-related category.
  4. Unless the category to be deleted is non-controversial – vandalism or a duplicate, for example – please do not depopulate the category (remove the tags from articles) before the community has made a decision.
  5. Add {{cfd}} to the category page for deletion. (If you are recommending that the category be renamed, you may also add a note giving the suggested new name.) This will add a message to it, and also put the page you are nominating into Category:Categories for deletion. It's important to do this to help alert people who are watching or browsing the category.
    1. Alternately, use the rename template like this: {{cfr|newname}}
    2. If you are concerned with a stub category, make sure to inform the WikiProject Stub sorting
  6. Add new deletion candidates under the appropriate day near the top of this page.
    1. Alternatively, if the category is a candidate for speedy renaming (see Wikipedia:Category renaming), add it to the speedy category at the bottom.
  7. Make sure you add a colon (:) in the link to the category being listed, like [[:Category:Foo]]. This makes the category link a hard link which can be seen on the page (and avoids putting this page into the category you are nominating).
  8. Sign any listing or vote you make by typing ~~~~ after your text.
  9. Link both categories to delete and categories to merge into. Failure to do this will delay consideration of your suggestion.

Some categories may be listed in Category:Categories for deletion but accidently not listed here.

NEW NOMINATIONS

[edit]

Category:Angola in fiction

[edit]
Nominator's rationale: merge, redundant category layer with only one subcategory. Marcocapelle (talk) 06:35, 10 April 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Category:Male suicides

[edit]
Nominator's rationale: Violates WP:TRIVIALCAT; being male is too trivial and broad a characteristic for a suicide category Songwaters (talk) 04:00, 10 April 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Keep this category, as long as the subcategory Category:Male murder–suicide perpetrators still exists. AHI-3000 (talk) 04:08, 10 April 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Category:Female suicides

Non-designated terrorist organization categories

[edit]
Nominator's rationale: Take 2, bundled this time. The last discussion was closed as no consensus for these two categories (though the other succeeded) without prejudice to renomination, so I am going to explain it better this time.
Violations of the structure of all of the other terrorism categories. We do not have categories for terrorists or non-designated terror groups, because the word varies by jurisdiction and definition, so sorting them by ideology is a no-go. Many of the groups in these categories are not designated as such and some are only by some jurisdictions. We do not have a similar category tree for extremist Muslim terrorism, nor should we, because of MOS:TERRORIST. We can qualify it and explain it in the text of articles, but cannot in categories.
In the past CfD, it was suggested that this be renamed to Category:Right-wing militant groups and Category:Fascist militant groups respectively a la Category:Left-wing militant groups, and while I am ambivalent towards the idea, most of the contents of these categories do not qualify as that (some are non militant groups, secret societies, political parties...). So if that is done this would necessitate a purge (and I don't think there is enough here to demonstrate the need for a fascist subdivision), but that is also an OK solution. So, keep, purge and rename as Category:Right-wing militant groups, or delete? PARAKANYAA (talk) 03:51, 10 April 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Rename to Category:Right-wing militant groups and Category:Fascist militant groups so that we may have them as counterparts to Category:Left-wing militant groups and Category:Socialist militant groups respectively. AHI-3000 (talk) 04:11, 10 April 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Fine by me, though as mentioned many groups in these categories do not fit the militant label. PARAKANYAA (talk) 04:13, 10 April 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Category:Beatriz Haddad Maia Tennis coaches

[edit]
Nominator's rationale: A really trivial category. Fyunck(click) (talk) 22:32, 2 April 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Theres literally another category that is exactly like this one but for Djokovic coaches, “Category:Novak Djokovic coaches”. I really do not see why this specific category should be seen as something different from that other one. Haddad Maia fan (talk) 23:01, 2 April 2025 (UTC)[reply]
A lot has to do with WikiProject Tennis guidelines for coaches. Bottom line is coaches are rare articles to be notable, and the most common case is when a player chooses coaching after retirement. Otherwise when a singles player wins one of the majors or is number 1 in the world, their coach gets way way more publicity. The bar is usually quite high for tennis coaches to have an article, let alone a whole tennis category. Fyunck(click) (talk) 01:04, 3 April 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Relisted to generate a more thorough discussion and clearer consensus.
